Lies & Videotape :: Cognitive Dissonance in the Marketplace

Seth Godin writes about the failure of ad copy to address real conumer issues. His thumbnail sketch of the real issues is this: solve my problem safely and inexpensively.

The real issue I have with most ad copy is rampant cognitive dissonance.

What stands out most in the Bissel v. Dyson comparative advertising campaigns is the Bissel lies.

Godin writes, "[Bissel's] vacuum looks like and works like a Dyson, but it's cheaper. "

Bissel's advertising claim is, "The Bissell Healthy Home Vacuum is built like no other vacuum."

Fact is, the Bissell's built very much like a Dyson.

Folks are increasingly savvy about lies, whether the lie be in bad performance or hyperbole in ad copy.

My biggest problem with our current President is that he's a bad liar. So's Ms. Rice. So's Bissell.

If you can't fib well, tell the truth.
